Is Underhowe Right For Your Group

Discover why this cottage is the one for your party or family reunion...

For Families
The bunk room with 3ft single beds suits younger children perfectly. Grasmere's gentle lakeside walks and Rothay Park provide safe outdoor spaces for families. The patio garden offers a secure area for outdoor play. However, the contemporary styling and open-plan living areas mean parents need to supervise younger children carefully around the log burner and floor-to-ceiling windows.
Groups Will Love...
Two separate living spaces give groups real flexibility throughout their stay. The sitting room with log burner creates a cosy retreat for conversation and reading. Meanwhile the TV lounge with its large screen and floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto the patio provides a bright social hub. The integrated Sonos system connects both spaces. This separation means early risers won't disturb late sleepers.
Pet Friendly
Underhowe does not accept pets under any circumstances. The property maintains a strict no-pets policy throughout the year. This makes it ideal for guests with allergies or those who prefer pet-free accommodation. If you're travelling with dogs, you'll need to look at alternative Lake District properties that welcome animals. The owners enforce this rule to protect the contemporary furnishings and maintain standards.

Underhowe Reviews

Thank you we had a lovely stay at Underhowe. Fab location perfect house for families with kids two sitting rooms meant that one could be used as a playroom. Clean and well maintained. We hope to come back!
Weve stayed at Underhowe three times over the past three years, and while the property remains lovely and in a fantastic location, its beginning to feel a little tired in places. The TV setup needs attentionthe HDMI adapter kept coming loose, and the Xbox connection was unreliable, often going to a blank screen midgame. The electrics also need a review light switches are confusing and dont always correspond to the room youre in. Some switches didnt work, and a few lights were out. One dimmer switch near the kitchen had knobs that kept coming off, which felt unsafe with small children crawling around. Cleanliness was another issuethe house was quite dusty, and I had to vacuum several times during our stay. Its also frustrating that a log burner is advertised but no logs are provided. For the price of the rental, an initial bag of logs would be a nice touch, along with clear guidance on where to buy more. Theres a noticeable draft around the kitchen door and the main entrance there used to be a curtain here, which is now gone. The draft under the kitchen units, especially near the sink, needs attention. Small touches like dishwasher tablets, which were provided in previous stays, were missing this time. Overall, we still love the property and its setting, but these issues meant extra expense and time spent on things like cleaning and buying essentialssomething you dont expect at this price point. With a little maintenance and attention to detail, Underhowe could easily return to being the perfect Lake District retreat.
Gorgeous property and couldnt be better located for exploring Grasmere. This was our second stay at the cottage and we had a wonderful Christmas there. The owner kindly put up a tree and decorations which made it extra special. I would highly recommend this property for anyone visiting the Lake District.

The photos struggle to get across this lovely converstion effectively too properties cojoined an old charming Lakes cottage on one side low ceilings, thick stone walls etc and then a modern, highceilinged build on the other side. We there was 5 of us and the property felt quite busy the key thing to get across was that the low ceilings and door frames in the old side of the property became a problem, we lost count of how many times we hit our heads! There was some maintenance issues, mould on the ceiling, light bulbs missing etc but generally a lovely conversion in a very central, great location. We wouldn't stay again, but had a nice stay.
Whilst the property looks amazing I am not sure anyone has actually walked through some of the practicalities of living there. Firstly, the light switches in the dining room and kitchen are totally confusing, switches in wrong rooms to the actual lights, and we never found the switch for the light over the kitchen island. Secondly, the kitchen is lovely, but if you want to store food you are limited as all the space is taken by pots, pans and glassware leaving 4 draws for dry storage. Cleaning, I think you need to speak with the cleanersmaintenance cobwebs is most corners, no end of light bulbs not working, no cleaning under the beds it appears they clean at eye view only, bunkbeds need securing to the wall for safety. Aside from this we had a great stay, there is no visitors book so we could not leave this feedback onsite, it is a lovely cottage, a few improvements could make it something special Cheers
Was perfect minor suggestions provide pods for coffee machine and dishwasher liquid. Very small cafetire for 8 people. Surprised no recycle bin, But it was amazing really was, so comfortable, close to everything. Did not use the car at all all amazing walks from the house. Loved it and would book again.

Lovely property and look forward to coming back.
We were actually booked to stay at a different property which was hit by issues with power and water supply and as such we were moved here at extremely short notice. It is absolutely perfect! The cottage is beautiful and immaculately presented. The decor is incredibly stylish yet also warm and welcoming. It was very clean and had all the facilities we could have wanted.

We stayed in November, and regularly visits the Lake District. The property is in an excellent location in the village, with Restaurants, Bars, Shops all in the village. The property was very well equipped, and very comfortable. However we did have issues with the heating and had to call Lake Lovers, who dealt with the issue immediately, it remained very difficult to regulate and keep at a normal temperature. We really enjoyed our stay and will return
Stunning house and perfect location. Attention to detail on a couple of things. Complimentary Shower gel etc were empty, shower basket fell off the wall in 1 ensuite, skirting boards needed cleaning and dust in corners of ceiling. I live in a house built in the 1800's so am familiar. Herdy mugs needed bleaching. Some very stained and Dwasher did not remove stains. Kitchen clock needs a new battery. Tiny things but worth noting. Perfect for my birthday get away. Lewis restaurant was first class.

We had a fabulous stay at Underhowe. This is the 3rd time we stayed and would recommend it. Some improvements since last time more utensils, including children cutlery, a welcome pack of chocolates, coffee, tea, milk & biscuits very welcome. Plus bin bags & dishwasher tablets coop in Grasmere is well stocked. heating is easy to use & water always warm. The coffee machine is nespresso & uses the original pods. Lakelovers didnt know when I asked pre visit so letting others know. House is in a perfect location. Would recommend cafe grand grand hotel, Lewis bistro for dinner both in walking distance. House is great for multi generational families with 2 good size living rooms. Well decorated and nice to have the garden & courtyard outside too.
Great property and so central. Found the beds slightly small but appreciate the lack of space to accommodate bigger beds. All in all for three generations we loved it and weather was hot and sunny and never needed a jacket which does not happen very often.

What a stunning house we so enjoyed our stay at Underhowe a family of 5 with 3 twenty somethings. There is no better location in Grasmere, luxurious fittings and modern comforts throughout. It was a step up from our usual priceband but was so worth it and felt like a treat. It has everything you need for wet weather and dry stunning windows onto the garden to watch the birds and the rain, a huge tv and sofa to relax on after walking the fells. Thank you very much for sharing your stunning house with us we had such a super time.
Stunning property, perfectly located. Would definitely recommend and stay there again.
For this intergenerational family holiday we chose this house because it did not allow pets and looked modern in the photos. Indeed because of the house layout this actually worked well as each area gave some privacy The managing company responded well to emails sent over this holiday period. We agree with previous comments that the turn into the drive for Underhowe is a tight one. It might be helpful to have a house name indicated on the corner of the lane leading to the house. When we arrived at the house for our christmas break we found a house without any sign whatsoever..ie no tree or any decoration. It would have. been nice to have had a welcoming pack on arrival with a pint of milk and some bread and biscuits as has been the case in all the other properties we have stayed in. Indeed but for the managing company's small cleaning kit there was absolutely nothing. We apppreciate that there was no mention of anything such as firewood etc but it would have been nice to have had some. This has been the norm in all our other rentals. The first bedroom we entered was cold but the agents instantly sent around very helpful plumbers twice to sort out our issue. They explained that as the heating stat for the bedrooms was at one end of the corridor that end itself got hot . The plumber turned down the stat which made the first room heating turn on but it only remained on if the bedroom door was kept open. The instruction folder left in the kitchen did not explain how the kitchen gadgets worked or where we should empty the 4 bins provided. We searched for external food waste collection receptacle and recyclable but found none. The folder has no local walks or attractions shown in it.. The TV controller for one of the rooms was missing. The dishwasher worked well but appears to have rollers missing or loose to the basket. The mottled saucepan leaks badly. The temperature in the shower in the main bathroom was too hot and could not be turned down to a comfortable level and the lack of a soap container made using the shower difficult. The hose for the bottom hand held section is broken and needs replacing. Tw of the chairs in the dining room had loose legs. Overall it was a lovely house in a lovely setting but a little more attention to detail and fixing issues already raised by previous tenants would have made our stay perfect
This property is fantastic and great location. Would recommend staying here if you have a party of 6.

The cottage was very cold in the old side , no wood for the fire, showers no where to put soap and shampoo or conditioner one . of the showers was to hot to shower in would get burnt as in did not turn down. beds are describe as king size in my opinion they are more like doubles but very comfortable. On arrival there was dirty plates on the side with mouldy on them. We was not told that it was a bit tight to get down the driveway .in all the cottage is in a very lovely village and very pretty, just need a little attention .
Beautiful home. Accommodation Downstairs is excellent, modern, relaxing and authentic too. Unfortunately the description of the three Kingsize bedrooms were inaccurate. Two bedrooms are doubles with small ensuite bathroom space. One of my main criteria for selecting Underhowe was it stated 3 Kingsized bedrooms all with ensuite in the write up. I was very disappointed for my guests. The bunk beds were a good size.

Superb property that has been cleverly designed and highly specified. Thank you.

Beautiful cottage in a perfect location in the heart of Grasmere. I would definitely comeback.
We have stayed at this property three times over recent years, it is a lovely cottage in a great location. However, it could do with with a bit of work & attention in some areas to bring the rating back to near a 5 star where it used to be.
We loved the big cottage in Grasmere. Lots of space for the 8 of us. Brilliant location in the centre of Grasmere, but a little set back from the main road and so it was quiet and private. Gorgeous garden, and comfy beds. New white fluffy towels, and a well equipped kitchen. Situated on a 'no through road' that's leads directly up to Easedale tarn....... So beautiful.
Underhowe is very conveniently positioned in Grasmere and offers excellent accommodation. It is fully equipped and comfortable. The private front garden is a nice facility. Although the property does not have the extensive views of the hills that others do in the area its peaceful and central location more than compensate. It is always easy to find fault small ensuites for example but overall this is a great holiday cottage and can be fully recommended.
Amazing place, perfect location. Fantastic facilities
Gordon
Lovely house , great areas to sit and relax . Missing some basics items such as no coffee, tea and sugar containers . No logs or kindling , for the price of the property this is disappointing. We have always found the owners have provided a small amount in every house weve rented . Location for pubs shops couldnt be better 100 yds away .Also ideal location for some great walking from the door. Overall beautiful property but just missing a few basic items . Would definitely stay again .
Natasha
Although Underhowe is every bit as beautiful in real life as it looks in the photos unfortunately, it is in need of some attention. There were stains on the sofa, the kitchen tap leaked which had clearly been reported before because there was a plethora of sellotape wrapped around the offending join in the cupboard. The house could really benefit from a deep clean as other visitors have mentioned. The light switches really are quite frustrating as were the multitude of thermostats which made it almost impossible for our party to get warm during our stay which was by far our biggest problem. All of that said, the property is in an enviable position if you love grasmere, the kitchen was well equipped and the diffusers around the house were a nice touch.
Antonietta
We very much enjoyed staying in this cottage, which had been booked to celebrate my 60th birthday with various family members. There's no doubting the quality of the decor and furniture. However, before my guests arrived I did spend quite a bit of time cleaning away cobwebs and dust. The kitchen was well equipped and clearly the comments made in previous reviews had been acted on. The bedrooms were comfortable although not very warm. There appeared to be a problem with the radiator in the main bedroom, but inspite of a service visit, remained cold . Couldn't work out what the problem was. It didn't spoil the stay however, and there were so many podotives. The cottage is beautiful and exceptionally well placed in Grasmere. I would stay here again.
We had an amazing stay. The property is fantastic and we all loved it. Will definitely be staying with you again.
Jennifer
1. The light switches were difficult to understand . This comment has been previously made. Perhaps some thing could be done about it. 2. There should be spare light bulbs for ALL the light fittings the bedside lights had fittings needing specialist light bulbs which weren't available 3. If you wanted to carry more than 2 drinks from the kitchen, there were no trays available. This comment has also been made previously. 4. We had a problem when water came through the ceiling from the bathroom off the main bedroom. Someone came quite quickly to see to it but couldn't solve the problem as the floor boards would have had to be taken up which could be done whilst the property was in use. Fair enough!
This is a lovely property as shown in the photos. Here are some of our thoughts on how to make the cottage better for guests. I think a 4 bedroom property needs more than one key I couldnt go out for an early morning run as I couldnt take the key and lock my friends in, nor could I leave the house unlocked. It also felt unsafe in terms of a fire escape, to have the kitchen door locked and the one key kept near the front door or vice versa. There were no recycling boxes outside, only a big bin, yet there were separate waste bins in the kitchen. It was unclear what we should do with all our paper, plastics and glass. We really wanted to recycle most of our waste but couldnt. It would be great if some large cooking pans were provided so we could cook for our whole group easily. Or state in description that they arent then wed bring our own. Unfortunately the nespresso coffee machine didnt work. Lighting was lovely just an idea, maybe label some of the switches. It took us several days to work out what switch did what! Apart from the issue of only having one key for 2 doors and 4 or more guests, all these points are really just even better ifs. The property is lovely and is in a great location. You dont really need to use a car there are great walks up high and also round the lake etc from the door.
Great cottage and location, perfect for our family, but kitchen lacking in a few items, scales etc. Also main living area quite dusty, my Granddaughter looked for a missing toy under the rug and found lots of jigsaw pieces, not ours, also sofas had definitely not been moved for some time, again slightly disappointing as check in and out are reduced to enable a deep covid clean. On our day of departure ,our refuge bin was removed before our departure time, so not enabling us to clear the property, previously two days before we had put the bin on the road as requested to be emptied .As yet we have not received our housekeeping bond back, ? Will look forward to your feedback to us.
Very nice house but we did see a lot of dusty cob web corners, if you would like to contact me by email I can advise
Underhowe was a great place for us as a family, quiet, peaceful and was in a great location. We will be back in 2022!
We were three couples with 3 small childrenbabies aged 3 years, 17 weeks and 6 weeks. House was roomy enough for all, comfortable and wellappointed. We deliberately chose to be in the village which we know well, for our convenience and location was perfect. We'd happily rent the same house again in future. A few quibblessuggestions about the kitchen facilities ... would like to share if you email me directly please.
The cottage was superb. The service from Lakelovers was poor. Emailed twice before our stay and received no response to either.
A very well appointed and spacious property set in a perfect location for easy ... A very well appointed and spacious property set in a perfect location for easy walking access to the excellent facilities in Grasmere and local walks
