Hillside Reviews

A brilliant property for our family of 5 2 adults, 3 children and 2 small dogs. Location was great, parking was easy and you could get onto footpaths very easily from the front door without having to drive anywhere. The kitchen was fully equipped with everything that we needed to cook for 5 nights. There is plenty of living space downstairs 2 living rooms including a dining room with a substantial table. The entrance hall was really big with plenty of space for a family's shoes, plus a coat rack. The back garden is lovely and fenced in so a great space to let the dogs out. At the back door there is another room for shoesstorage which was much appreciated as a family 'dumping ground'. Upstairs, 2 bathrooms and 3 bedrooms. The bed's were all comfortable and had lovely soft sheets with extra blankets available. This has been one of our favourite holiday houses as it has been really well thought out, we had everything we needed and we'd definitely stay again. I can't comment on Sykes as a company, as apart from booking online, we had no dealings with them.

Overall the property was ideal for our needs, six adults. House has two large lounges and three large bedrooms, so plenty of room for all of us and two dogs! House was clean, most of the beds were comfortable apart from the double bed in the second bedroom, which is ready for a new mattress. Also the mattresses on the single beds were obviously summer quilts and werent suitable for the cold weather we had and had to be topped up with blankets which were available. Some updating of the pipe work and plumbing required in the back porch required as water appears to be leaking after use of showers and bath. Otherwise we had a very enjoyable stay and would go there again as location is great and handy for the local pub and lovely walks nearby.
We've stayed here a few times previously. Size and location are lovely however, this year we had a couple of disappointments, The fire starter packs were very minimal this year compared to last year. It felt as though a previous tenant had left some logs and this had been split between the two rooms. We've also also had tea, coffee, sugar and milk left previously but not this year. We couldn't get the bottom cooker to work and there's no manual to tell you how to work it. Not sure if it's broken or we just couldn't figure it out. Worst of all was the smell of sewage that kept emanating around the house, the ensuite toilet was the worst with smells also coming from both showers plug areas when used, both shower trays took a little while to drain we dud text the landlord but got no reply. We do usually enjoy staying here, it is a lovely location and the locals are very friendly. The Old King's Head does lovely food. The house this time, felt like it's been a bit neglected, drain smell, a leaking pipe out the back in the extension part. The information left for tenants is quite out of date. The tv remote for the tv in the room with floorboards doesn't work properly. Just needs a bit of tlc and information updating.
Firstly, the positives. Great location. Nice village. Nice people. Good dog walking with public footpath 50 yards away. The garden was well kept and nice garden table that catches the evening sun. This is a large property with generously sized rooms. Now the more iffy issues The property although clean, needs some TLC. More crockery is required. There are no cups and only four mugs for a property sleeping eight. The hall flooring needs replacing. The laminate is delaminating and lifting in places. The lighting in most rooms is inadequate with only a central light in most rooms. The one reading lamp in the lounge wasnt working.
Cottage in good position but overall the property needs maintenance and an upgrade. Window in onsuite bedroom would not open giving no means of escape ! There was no cleaning spray ,a lack of mugs and no milk as stated. Snooker room was full of cobwebs and unplayable. Overall disappointing.

We have been to Hilltop before and loved it, that was 5yrs ago. We booked this cottage again because of its comfort, cleanliness and how chilled everyone is when we stay. Lovely walks, and scenery from every window, we can't wait to come back. Strongly recommend if want to unwind and relax with your favourite people.
Denise
Fabulous home in a great location. Very spacious and comfortable. We would definitely recommend and would love to return.

This was a perfect cottage for a large family group visiting for a walking weekend. Lots of room, warm. generous with coal and logs, nice garden and lovely outlook onto the village square. Great for local shops and pubs. Had a great time would happily stay at this property again.
We stayed here years ago and loved it. Stayed again and absolutely loved it. Love the slight changes they've made with the sitting roomdining room. We just love the cottage, nice and comfortable, kitchen is lovely, garden well maintained, locals are friendly. Wonderful to have a coal fire too. Butchers and grocers down the road, post office too, small garage with petrol and diesel, also sells, kindling, logs and coal. Small cafe next door, cook from fresh. Not far from the main tourist places. Just love it. No WiFi so took our own portable WiFi, worked a treat. The only slight thing I would change would be the booking in and out times, maybe 12 noon for both.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hillside! ! The property is enormous and really easy to get to. The kitchen was really well equipped, stunning garden, and lots of space to relax. Definitely recommend for a large group! The beds are comfy, there was lots of recommendations for the local area, and just generally a great stay. Would also recommend Old Kings head in the village for food and the bakery for coffee and pastries. We will definitely return!!
Fantastic property, bags of room, very comfortable, great garden. We've stopped almost every year for the last 12 years or so as it is ideal for our extended family and dogs, and,John the owner, is very accomodating.
George
The location of the cottage was ideal but there were several maintainance issues to be dealt with the worst of which was a dripping overflow pipe inside the rear porch causing us to lift our belongings off the floor as they were getting wet. Also, the BBQ framework had rotted away completely making it unsafe particularly with a 4 year old running round the garden. Altogether we felt the house had been furnished to provide the bare minimum for letting
Elizabeth
We had the most amazing holiday, the house was a delight and the beds were the best we've had in a holiday home. The house is situated in a beautiful village with the best facilities that you could want. Fabulous walks for those who struggle to get about wheel chair friendlyto those that like a challenge. Great place to have your dog with you .
Vickie
Another fantastic stay at Hillside. The house is wonderful and the setting is perfect. We regard this as our second home and look forward to returning every year.
Nicola
Amazing property. We had a wonderful stay.
Property was in the heart of the lovely little village and in the main square. Village has everything should you need any supplies grocers, butchers, bakery, pubs, cafe, post office. The house was great, very clean and had everything needed for an enjoyable stay. It had also been decorated for Christmas which was a lovely touch. Plenty of space for 8 people with 1 double ensuite, 1 double, and 4 single beds across 3 bedrooms. The 2 sitting rooms were great if people wanted to watch different TV channels. Only slight negative is there was no internet so we had to rely upon 4G signal which was very hit and miss. As we were on holiday it wasn't too much of a problem.
Fantastic house in the square , the local walk at Broughton tower is idyllic, brilliant for the dogs. The local area is so underrated, long may it stay that way The garden at the rear is to die for. Excellent butchers and bakers. My only gripe was no WiFi an essential these days although I was aware before booking
Adrian
A really lovely, comfortable, spacious and very well equipped cottage. Would Ive to visit in the winter to make full use of the open fireplaces! Loved the cottage, the village of Broughton was delightful and the local area stunning, with easy access to the lakes, Coniston in particular, the fells and also the sea. Wed never been to this region of Cumbria and its definitely somewhere well revisit and would be more than happy to stay at Hillside again.
Timothy
Lovely property very well equipped and in a lovely setting with a beautiful quiet garden. Everything you need for a relaxing family holiday with stunning walks on your door step, a fantastic bakery in the village as well as a great grocery store and butchers. We would definitely pick this cottage again.
Deborah
WiFi would be helpful but we managed. The bedroom door doesnt shut which is annoying. Bathroom excellent. Kitchen needs a colander. Garden lovely. Overall very nice house.
Vickie
Always an absolute pleasure to stay at Hillside we never want to leave!
Christian
Our family enjoyed a fabulous stay at Hillside. The property and its location was perfect for our Easter break with so much to see and do from the doorstep. We loved the pretty enclosed garden space, and used the bench for lunches in the garden. The property had plenty of space and had everything we needed during our stay. The open fire place was so cosy on an evening and we felt the whole property was clean, relaxing and homely. We didn't mind the lack of WiFi this wasn't an issue at all. The local walks were beautiful. Our young children loved exploring the ponds and fields. The pubs in the square were so friendly, and served excellent food and drink. Would recommend Hillside to everyone especially those with children. Thank you very much!
Beautiful property with lots of lovely dog walks and very friendly local pub, ... Beautiful property with lots of lovely dog walks and very friendly local pub, and secure garden for our dogs, everything you need for a relaxing break, really enjoyed it
Terrence
Hillside was great for us, except for two things 1 We could not find any information about the heating arangements. It took until our last day before someone found the unlabelled instructions book, under a table in a room we did not use. We did not realise the heatinghot water was on a timer and when we got back one day, soaked with the rain, we were very disappointed there was no hot water. It turned out this came on around 17.00hr 2 Front bedrooms. It would be good if the owners fitted blinds to the front bedroom windows to stop light from the powerful street lamp shining in Otherwise, full marks!
Judith
This is a beautiful home, furnished to suit the area and period of the property. . We felt at home in the comfortable house. Lots of space but still warm and cosy. The houses was spotlessly clean and the beds very comfy. We had a light out in the shower room and an electrician came the same day! Ideal for those who want to get away from it all. No WiFi and limited reception for the phone. Definitely return.
Property in in a great place in the town square, walks in all directions. Nice shops pubs & cafes. There is plenty of space and well maintained. The only thing that is missing is the internet, yes there is mobile signal many different ones & poor in the square but inside the stone walls very poor and intermittent . Full fibre internet is available in the village so it would be nice in the house. A few pounds more on the price to cover it, small. Full mobile, internet and more choice of tv. Thank you.
Wonderful place to stay right in the heart of the village. Good pubs, good walks, local. And not more than 30mins drive to other destinations in the lakes. Superb...
Geoffrey
Once again excellent all round in a perfect location.
This was the perfect holiday home for us. We loved it. There were 4 huge rooms upstairs and down. It was clean and tidy, with a stone floor in the kitchen, so I wasn't worried about the dogs causing any problems. Crisp, white bedding. Open fires if you wanted them. For me the best bit was the garden... glorious!
Absolutely loved our stay. The house, garden and surrounding area was lovely. Missed WiFi a little but only cause signal was so poor so those of us who needed to be reachable for children etc was quite difficult. Only thing would maybe be appreciated more would be spare black bin bags we forgot our own. But that aside our stay was wonderful!
Only one wish WiFi would've been fantastic
Comfortable and warm cottage, enjoyed our visit but picked a bad week with storms Dudley and Eunice. Lack of WiFi a problem. Lost TV signal in storm and poor phone signal meant could not use hotspot. Will definitely use again.
The house is perfect, its well furnished and equipped with everything we needed. Broughton has every amenity right on the doorstep. Great walks, our favourite pub the Manor Arms just across the square and an amazing butchers and grocers. Well definitely be back.
Jacqueline
We enjoyed our Christmas break at Hillside and we were impressed with the Christmas decorations that had been provided and the extra touches which made our Christmas home from home. Comfy beds and good shower and bath facilities. The only thing that was missing was wifi and thought a door mat at the front entrance would be useful especially in the winter with muddy boots and dirty dog paws etc. We actually put newspaper down for our boots. Otherwise a perfect stay in a lovely market village and friendly locals.
Caroline
Amazing place, loved the house and surrounding area.
Cheryl
Perfect location, the cottage had everything we needed for a weeks stay, the kitchen had good quality pots & pans along with all the utensils needed, Lots of walks literally steps away, the village shops were a bonus along with 3 pubs, two serving good quality food. The only draw back was the lack of WIFI, but apart from that it was pretty much perfect
Vickie
Fab house in a great location
The village is lovely, lots of good walks in close distance. The garden and house are exactly as they look on the photos, garden was nice and big for our two pups. Our only issue was that the outdoor bins were full, and no bin bags were provided. I messaged the owner to try and resolve this but got no response. The local shop is not open on Sunday or bank holidays. Besides for that though, its a lovely house and we had a great stay.
